Winter Sports

Though the upper Himalaya is a perrennial winter arena, organised winter sports, primarily skiing, is available at just four locations, Gulmarg in Kashmir, Solang valley & Narkanda in Himachal and Auli in Uttaranchal. All four have lifts and also provide equipment & training at various levels.

Of these Gulnarg, at an altitude of 2790 metres and 90 km from Srinagar is the oldest ski resort & best known internationally. Although it was affected by the troubles in the valley it has staged a comeback in the past two years.

Auli, the closest Ski destination from Delhi, is 16 km from Joshimath on the Delhi-Rishikesh-Badrinath route. The resort is run by Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam (GMVN). Its main attraction is its 3 km long slope ranging from a height of 2519 to 3049 and snow beaters to keep the slopes fit for skiing at all times.  A 500 m long ski-lift carries skiiers up the slopes.

GMVN provides ski equipment and also conducts 7 and 14 days skiing courses with  qualified ski instructors. Apart from the budget GMVN hotel at Auli accommodation is also available in a Swiss chalet style hotel, Hotel Cliffside.

Auli also offers panoramic views of Nanda Devi & its surrounding peaks and boasts the Asia's longest - 4 km - cable car (Gondola).

Some good ski slopes are located in Solang Valley which is about 14Kms from Manali. Skiiing can be done in January & February. From March till June skiing can be done above Manali in

Gulaba, Marhi and Rohtang.

Skiing at Narkanda was started in 1980 and since then HPTDC has conducted skiing courses every year. Narkanda is 65 km. from Shimla and is connected by Bus/Taxi services. The nearest Railway Station (65 km) and Airport (88 km) are also at Shimla.

Those with their own equipment can also do a limited amount of skiing at Kufri, above the Shimla ridge.
